Why Nervous System Regulation Matters

The nervous system plays a central role in how we respond to stress, recover from adversity, regulate emotions, maintain focus, make decisions, and adapt to changing environments.

While physical fitness and operational capability are critical components of Defence readiness, the ability to effectively regulate and recover from stress is equally important.

Research involving military personnel has identified physiological markers of nervous system function, including Heart Rate Variability (HRV), as potential indicators of resilience and adaptability to operational stress. Studies have demonstrated that lower levels of HRV prior to deployment were associated with greater post-deployment PTSD symptom severity, highlighting the important role that nervous system flexibility and recovery capacity may play in an individual's response to prolonged stress exposure.

While no single factor determines resilience, growing evidence suggests that supporting nervous system regulation may contribute to improved recovery, emotional regulation, adaptability, performance, and overall wellbeing.
